STRETCH MARKS EXPLAINED ...

WHAT ARE STRETCH MARKS?

The skin consists of 3 layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. During pregnancy, your skin stretches quickly, causing small tears in the dermis. With time, these tears turn into little scars, know as 'stretch marks'. As soon as they appear, the stretch marks form slightly blistered red-violet welts. Gradually, they become lighter, become pearly white, and leave on your skin slightly wrinkled stripes. During pregnancy, stretch marks can appear from the 5th month on the belly, hips, thighs and breasts.

WHERE DO THEY COME FROM AND WHO IS AFFECTED?

During pregnancy, our body secretes more cortisol, a hormone which weakens elastic fibers, especially collagen. This is why stretch marks appear more particularly during this periods of life. Additionally, stretching of the skin following excessive weight gain causes some of the elastic fibers in the dermis to break, accompanied by a loss of skin elasticity. 50 - 70% of women are affected by stretch marks. There are no hard and fast rules but young, white and relatively pale skins seem to be most at risk.

WHEN AND WHERE DO THEY APPEAR?

Stretch marks can appear from the 4th month of pregnancy. In the last 3 months, when the skin is stretched even more (as your baby grows), they may become more numerous on your stomach, hips, thighs and breasts.

HOW TO PREVENT STRETCH MARKS?

Regular scrubs are recommended. The skin breathes better, which facilitates the penetration of creams and oils. The key to good prevention is also to massage with a suitable stretch mark oil from the beginning of pregnancy until 4 months after delivery. This promotes micro-circulation and helps the skin to distend gently. Alongside nourishing your skin, improve your skin's elasticity by drinking plenty of water!
